Hong Kong’s population growth in the next 10 years will be concentrated in New Territories and Kowloon, says a report on population projection, published by the Planning Department yesterday.

Hong Kong Island, on the other hand, will see a slight drop in its population, from 1.26 million to 1.25 million.

The populations of New Territories and Kowloon are projected to grow by 11 per cent and 10 per cent over the next 10 years, reaching 3.98 million and 2.28 million, respectively.By 2015, New Territories’ share of the population will rise from 52 per cent to 53 per cent, while that of Hong Kong Island will drop from 18 per cent to 17 per cent. Kowloon’s share will stay steady at 30 per cent.

Sha Tin is likely to remain the most populated district in the next 10 years, with its population expected to rise from 620,000 in 2005 to 707,600 in 2015.

Yuen Long will see the biggest population boom in Hong Kong, with an increase of 108,900 people, pushing its total population to 660,800.

Also, Yuen Long is expected to have the youngest population in Hong Kong, with a projected median age of 39.9, and Wan Chai, the oldest, with a median age of 47.9.

The report, Projections of Population Distribution, 2006-2015, shows population distribution with the help of three geographical demarcation systems, including the District Councils, New Town and Tertiary Planning Unit.

The data in the report are based on Census and Statistics Department’s projections of territorial population in 2004.

The projections also take into account planning information on housing development proposals available up to March 2006.

Explaining the advantages of the report, the Planning Department said: “The projection of geographical distribution of population and population age structure provides the government with a basis for forward planning at local levels.”

出生率及人口老化

香港的出生率在全世界225個國家及地區中是最低的——每一千人中只有7.63個新生嬰孩，而每名婦女只出生0.91個嬰孩。再加上平均預期壽命的增長，人口老化的程度將越來越大。按香港政府統計處在2004年所發表的《香港人口推算2004－2033》，估計到了2033年，全港65歲及以上的人口將有27%，相對2003年的11%，增長相當顯著。這些發展都嚴重影響到香港政府的城市發展規劃。
