Just a few personal points:

The beast and the similar characters in other stories usually had ugly appearance (faces) but they were kind people;

At first (as told by the beginning or end of the story), they had good appearance or were wealthy;

They usually had done something wrong to get the ugly appearance or to become poor and unlucky;

After they have done some good things, they resumed to their original good appearance or to become wealthy again;

They usually got their rewards by marrying a beautifully princess (or lady) or becoming a wealthy and fortunate king (or guy) at the end of the story;

The stories always told us even if someone had encountered bad happenings, if he continued to do good things, to face/solve the problems with courage, he would finally get good results/endings.
