Title: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Authur: Oxford
Writer: Jennifer Bassett
When I first set eyes on the book title, there was not much that I
could know about the story. From guessing, this could be an adventure or
a horror. However, it was obvious that it has something to do with a dog.
After reading, I was totally amazed, both by the intelligence of a
person with Asperger’s Syndrome, and the way he or she felt about things.
The book type is, frankly speaking, hard to define because it is a
combination of adventure, social, detective and mathematical elements.
But this complication results in an intriguing and in-depth story.
I am surprised to find that the author, Mark is not having Asperger’s
Syndrome himself, since the descriptions of Christ’s illness in the book
are so detailed and convincing. The story is also easy to follow as Mr.
Haddon is also very talented in story-telling.
The story talks about Christopher, a boy in Britain with Asperger’s
Syndrome, trying to reveal the mystery of the death of a dog. As you keep
on reading, you will find out that this is not the main focus but only an
incident to arouse your inquisitiveness at the beginning.
The thoughts of Christ and the specialty of a person with Asperger’s
Syndrome are the main parts. Though Christ does not have many feelings
like we do, there are still parts talking about his totally logical “feelings”
towards the parental conflicts. I especially love the idea of using prime
numbers, instead of the normal one two three sequence, for the chapters
and Christ’s special behavior like “not eating the food if different sorts of
it are touching each other”.
I think all that the author wants to do is to introduce people with
Asperger’s Syndrome to us, to tell us how intelligent they are, as well as
the over-logical mind leading to plain feelings. Their features are utterly
described. I admire the complexity of the plot that leaves no gap for me to
get bored, as it is filled with interesting mathematical problems. For
instance, the probability of getting the right door for a car in the case
listed in the book is 2 in 3 but not 1 in 2.
This is a rather nice book, with informative details about the
behaviours or people with Asperger’s Syndrome. For a person like me,
who likes math, this should apparently be a good read. You would
certainly get to know about an entirely different way of thinking – high
order thinking.
