第一、以德交友，患難與共：要如何交朋友呢？首先須問自己想交什麼樣的朋友。如果希望交到真心的朋友，就要拿出自己的真心，以道德、以義氣、以慈悲來交往；如此得來的朋友，在最緊要關頭時，大都能同甘共苦。所謂「患難見真情」，在最困頓的時候，還能不變初衷的支助扶持，才是真正的朋友。

第二、以誠交友，肝膽相照：和朋友相處，彼此要講究知心，講究坦誠，講究肝膽相照。雙方以真實的言語、真實的感情交往，擯除利害關係，擁有手足般的義氣情誼，能相知相惜，相互關愛，彼此扶助，就是真正的肝膽相照了。如戰國時的隱士田光，為助燕太子丹刺秦王，舉薦荊軻，更為守秘而刎頸，田光之忠誠，可謂肝膽相照。

第三、以知交友，見多識廣：見識廣博或具有專業知識的人，會受到朋友的尊重與信賴。同樣的，要結交有內涵的朋友，也要先充實自己的內涵；懂得隨時吸取新知的人，智慧容易開啟，也會吸引許多見多識廣的人到身邊來。劉禹錫之交往即是「談笑有鴻儒，往來無白丁，可以調素琴，閱金經。」

第四、以道交友，法樂融融：「道風德香傳千里」，有道德的人、有修養的人，無人不欣喜，不論遠近，大家都會爭相來親近。和他交往的人，也都會依他自勉，而得到提升，此即所謂「與善友交，入芝蘭之室，久而不聞其香，即與之化矣」。

中庸說：「待人以誠，感人以德，交人以善，這是率性之謂道。」朋友交往以誠以真，相待以禮以敬，相處以平以淡，相勉以學以道，都是交朋友的原則，所以交友之道有四點：

第一、以德交友，患難與共；

第二、以誠交友，肝膽相照；

第三、以知交友，見多識廣；

第四、以道交友，法樂融融。
