You should first consider the following items:
1. What do you and your friends like to do when travelling?
2. What is your budget? And how much time do you plan to stay in California?
3. Do you or your friends know how to drive? And if so, will you be renting a car?
4. What time of the year are you planning to go to California?
5. Is this your first time going to California?
6. Are you and your friends the types of individuals who need to visit all the tourist hot spots? Or, are you more the "unbeaten path" type and want to try to go somewhere more unique?
California is a very large state and has lots of places to visit. If you are more interested in the nature, you can go north to the Shasta/Cascade region for volcanos and snow-capped mountains even in the summer, or northwest for the Pacific Coast and the giant redwoods, the central-east for Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe, inner-east for the Death Valley, south-east for the Mojave Desert, Joshua Tree National Park and Palm Springs, or the central coast from Monterey to San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara; or the metropolitan areas of the Bay Area (San Francisco and surrounding cities), the Los Angeles Basin, or the San Diego area plus perhaps Tijuana in Mexico.
If you don't have a car, your traveling can be restricted to the urban areas.
If this is your first time to California, I would suggest that you stay in San Francisco because it is very charming city and you can explore the city on foot and with public transportation. It is also easy to find transportation that will get you to Sausalito or San Jose, which are also decent areas to visit. You may also be able to join local tours that will bring you to Napa Valley or perhaps even Yosemite.
