Louis Vuitton does not offer any discounts. The popularity reflects the success of LVMH's marketing prowess, especially in Asian when flashy branded goods are most sought-after. Most shoppers still go for its monogram canvass bags because they are symbolic to the owner's wealth here in Hong Kong (or so they think). The line on the 25th is nothing special; I think this kind of crowd can be seen any day any time at the TST shop. I have seen similar lines in other shops and even in other cities.
Most Gucci shops (by that I mean all the barnds owned by Gucci, such as Sergio Rossi, etc.) should have a sale right around now till January. The usual discount is 30% off. The VIP status is given rather loosely here, and most frequent shoppers should have received their "VIP" notices a few days before the public sale began. If the public sale begins on 22nd, the VIP sale might begin on 20th. However, if you happened to be in the shop on 20th and you are not a "VIP", I am sure you get the same discounts too.
If you're in the market for a regular canvass handbag (as seen in every other person in HK), I suggest you upgrade your taste to something a little less recognizable, such as Goyard (at Harvey Nichols). Goyard has a longer history than Vuitton and its production is much smaller, hence more exclusive. And in my experience, Goyard's canvass lasts longer than Vuitton's. Gucci's is even worse. Do not hope for a sale at Goyard though.
