1993 Mercury Sable Transmission Trouble?

Okay so I went to leave work today and my car wouldn't go anywhere. No matter what gear I am in (Reverse, Overdrive, Drive, First), it just revs like it is in neutral but the tires don't spin or anything. A guy here at work seems to think that it is a quart low on transmission fluid while my step-dad (who I bought the car from) seems to think that there are some kind of vents or something that could be blocked since I may have parked in 6-12" deep snow.

I know squat about this car as I only have it because my Honda was stolen and all I really want to do is get it on the road so I'm not stuck here. Any suggestions?

Well I let it run for about half an hour before I hopped in to take off. I had only planned on letting it warm up a couple of minutes but then I got caught up helping out my relief with something.

Check the dip stick for fluid color,it should be red or reddish pink,if it has a burnt smell,or disclorered Drop the transmission pan,check for built up sludge,change the filter clean the pan install new filter and pan fill with new fluid and then see what happens.

You may be a bit low on fluid, AND your transmission needs to be warmed up. Once it's warm, it may start shifting once again. You can never diagnose a car problem when it's cold, but you can only FIX it when it's cold. A clear dilemma, yes?

With the cost and trouble of replacing the torque converter it wouldn't really make sense to leave the rest of the old transaxle in there. In fact, it doesn't really make much sense pouring any money into a car that wouldn't be worth $1500 if it was in good shape.

If it does not respond at all to the shifter, check the linkage to make sure nothing has come apart, on the column and the side of the trans. If all is well there you should have a competent shop check it out.. Sounds minor because transmissions ususlly fail gradually.
