Today,I picked up a call from an unknown woman.I was very nervous as she spoke English to me.Just 15 sec, I decided to cut it off, because I couldn't understand, the only word I heard was 'appointment'.I was very depressed after that, couse I've been staying in UK for 1 year and I can't speak to people in English with phone. Also, I'm worrying about the call as some days ago, I was lookin for a job, and it may be the appointment from the employer.who can help me?

When I study in the US, I have the same problem with you because I alway stick around with my friends from HK. Even I was in University, I hate to do the group project with the American becasue I wouldn't understand what they said and they are so cold to me. Luckily, I have a chance to work with a company there are a lot of people who are form Thai, Korean, Japan and Mexico. So I start to communicate with them, and because they are not they native English speaking I have more confidance to speak with them. So I believe you have to make some friends and let you communicate in English and no just go out with your Hong Kong-ese friends, Try the make some friends who are from Asia (Japan, Korean, Thai) and build up your confidence first....I believe they are a lot or Asian in UK too..Good Luck and enjoy the time in UK

You may try to speak in Eng at home or with your family members. You need to think it is a common language. Try to feel proud to speak Eng. Don't tell yourself think ill of Eng. If you have time, you may join the cultural exchange project too. Granted you feel nervous, your friend must be willing to listen what you say, anyway don't ne shy.

Hi there,

If next time you have the same problem, first I will tell him/her, could you mind to slow down. If you really nervous can't catch up and don't know what to say. Please tell him/her, you are not at home right now, I am his/her sister or brother, can I take the message and ask his to return your call when he/she back.

If you honest to tell him/her to slow down, they will understand you are not native speaker. Most important thing is you have an interview, right. Don't feel embrass you have been one year UK life experience but still can't speak and answer phone calls.

You still have a long way to go, don't give up,ok.

Good Luck, looking forward to hear you good news.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

If u want to speak good english, practice more is the best way, but if you are looking for a job now, I think it's too late for u to practice now.

May be you can call the company you apply for and ask them whether they have called you before, you can use 'the network has some problems and you can't hear very clearly that time' as an excuse. BUT REMEMBER, don't be nervous this time, hear it with all your attention, if you have lived in UK before, I think it will not border you.

In fact, if they call you speaking in english, I think the english usage will be very important in the interview, do prepare more, likes go through the website of the company, it can help you to have full knowledge about the company, including the job profile etc.. And try to speak more in daily life before interview, it can make you accustom to speak in english, so can help you to speak more fluent in the interview.

Practice makes perfect is always right in oral. Read more and speak more, I think you are just too nervous and cannot 'tune9; your channel to english suddenly, but not a real problem to you if you can overcome your nervousness.

Keep calm and don't be nervous, if you can't really hear very clear, don't feel shame to say excuse me or sorry, I think they will repeat again. Good luck!!
