生物學上，呼吸（breath）其實是指空氣在肺部進行的換氣（gas exchange）的過程。
空氣被吸入肺部後，空氣中的氧氣會穿過肺泡膜進入血液中。
空氣會在血液裡流到身體各部分，然後被細胞吸收。

食物被人攝食後，會在腸胃進行消化作用（digestion），分成細小的單位。
人類最常直接使用的營養單位是分解碳水化合物後生成的葡萄糖。
各種營養單位穿過腸胃壁後最終送進血管或淋巴。
組血液運送到身體各部分的細胞。

細胞就是進行呼吸作用（respriation）的地方。
葡萄糖首先進入醣解作用（glycolysis），然後進入檸檬酸循環（TCA Cycle 或 Crab Cycle），
再經過電子傳遞鏈（Electron Transport Chain），最終產生大量能量。
結果食物被氧氣分解成水和二氧化碳－－這就是人為什麼會呼出二氧化碳的原因。

人失血會死，正因為無法運送氧氣和食物到細胞，導致細胞大量死亡。
燒碳時吸入一氧化碳會死，是因為一氧化碳令紅血球無法輸送氧氣，細胞無法獲得氧氣。

In general, we interpret the word "respiration" as we breathe in the air and breathe out the air. However, in biochemical point of view, respiration has its additional meaning. To be precise, usually we will describe the breathing which is your meaning of "respiration" as ventilation. In biochemcial point of view, respiration is a series of chemical process in which the sugar is broken down into carbon dioxide and water in the presence of oxygen. And this process can give out energy. The overall reaction is:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -------> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy

There is a reverse process in the nature to convert the carbon dioxide and water back to sugar by using the solar energy. This process is called photosynthesis.

Breathing is happened in lung,it specific refers to the gaseous exchange.
ie.breathing in and breathing out.

However,respiration is happened in the cell which include cytoplasm and mitochondria.Respiration also called cellular respiration.
it involved 3 stages:glycolysis,kreb's cycle and electron transport system.
cellular respiration can divided into 2 types,anaerobic respiration and aerobic respiration.the former can only release 2 ATP and the latter can release 38 ATP.

The main difference between breathing and respiration is the place and whether it will release energy.
