廿五年前的今天，你在做甚麽呢？
廿五年前是1980年，亦是樹仁學院校友會成立的一年。無論你當年正是嬰孩、小學生、中學生、樹仁學生，還是尚未出生，我們今天都是在樹仁校訓「敦仁博物」下成長的一羣。無論你是樹仁學生時，校舍在跑馬地成和道、灣仔萬茂里，還是北角寶馬山，我們今天都是都是樹仁的一份子。無論你是修讀文憑課程、與其他大學合辦的課程，還是學位課程，我們今天都期望你成為樹仁校友會的一員。

過去二十五年，樹仁學院與香港社會同步向前，克服無數的困難，而校友會一直為母校發展，竭盡所能。對於校友會而言，這個二十五歲生辰著實得來不易。幸得校監、校長及不少校友的支持，校友會今天才可以傲然踏入廿五周歲。我們會做好準備，協助母校邁向大學之路，並繼續成為連繫母校和校友之間的一道橋樑。

為慶祝校友會成立銀禧紀念，我們特重整校友會網頁，除加強提供會務和母校資訊外，更會陸續加添其他增值服務，構思中的包括校友招聘園地、行內人語等，冀能為你們提供更好的服務。

我們更會在2005年舉辦多項慶祝活動，包括計劃與母校合作舉辦校友日、到訪內地城市促進交流、舉辦廿五周年紀念晚宴、專題講座等。希望藉一系列的活動，建立一個更緊密和更具活力的校友網絡。

風雨同途，我們已走過了廿五個年頭，但只有你的參與，才賦予「我們」一詞新的定義，壯大我們的陣容，挽手迎接樹仁大學的誕生。

回應教育改革諮詢文件中提供私立大學的意念，在各大報章發表評論斗章及意書，並參與研討會支持母校爭取正名為私立大學。

樹仁係寶馬山嫁............

Hong Kong Shue Yan College was founded in 1971. The idea of an independent liberal arts College was first conceived in the spring of that year when Dr. Henry H. L. Hu, an ex-Legislative Councillor, and Dr. CHUNG Chi Yung, a prominent educationist, concerned over the acute shortage of college places for the local Form VI students aspiring after university education, made up their minds to establish an institution of higher learning for the benefit of the youths and in the interests of our society as a whole.

The College has begun its quest for academic accreditation as a degree granting institution in 1995. Starting from September 2001, ten degree programmes have been validated by the HKCAA. The College is working towards being the first private university in the not too distant future.


Towards the First Private University in HK
There are now ten degree programmes offered in HKSYC. We anticipate that the validation of these degree programmes will gain us further recognition and support for Shue Yan College to become Hong Kong's first private university.

HKSYC is the only education institution in Hong Kong that has insisted on offering 4-year higher education programmes for more than 30 years.

Advantages over Associate Degree Programes
HKSYC offers degree programmes recognized by the Hong Kong Government and overseas universities. Graduates can further their study either in local or overseas institutions. An associate's degree is only an equivalence to higher diplomas and is the lowest in the hierarchy of academic degrees in North America.

Promote Chinese Culture
The Chinese meaning of Shue Yan is the cultivation of virtue. Emphasis is laid on the preservation and propagation of traditional Chinese culture and the educational ideals of Confucianism, making Shue Yan a very valuable addition to the educational matrix of Hong Kong.

Whole Person Education
HKSYC aims to promote the spirit of Humanity and the freedom of learning to provide youths with suitable environment and facility for the intensive pursuit of truth, knowledge and wisdom while making contribution to a better society.

Hong Kong Shue Yan College was founded in 1971. The idea of an independent liberal arts college was first conceived in the spring of that year when Dr. Henry H. L. Hu, a then Legislative Councillor, and Dr. Chung Chi Yung, a prominent educationist, concerned over the acute shortage of college places for local Form VI students aspiring after university education, decided to establish an institution of higher learning for the benefit of the youths and in the interests of our society as a whole.
Their ideas were readily endorsed by civic leaders of Hong Kong. In July 1971, a college board was formed with well-known figures in Hong Kong, with the late Hon. Wilfred S. B. Wong, C.B.E., J.P. as Chairman and the late Mr. H. C. Ting, O.B.E. as Vice-Chairman. A college building on Sing Woo Road, Happy Valley was acquired, and Shue Yan (romanized from the Chinese characters 樹仁 , meaning the cultivation of virtue) was chosen as its name. On 20th September, 1971 the College was formally inaugurated by the Hon. Wilfred S. B. Wong.

The following extracts from the speeches by the late Hon. Wilfred Wong and the late Rt. Rev. Gilbert Baker respectively may serve to reflect in broad outline the aims of the College:-

Wilfred S. B. Wong: "The aim of the establishment of Shue Yan College is not for profit but it is hoped to provide the ideal education, i.e. the cultivation of virtue. Virtue applies when the ideal person meets other persons. Therefore, to establish virtue one has to start from the person. One wants to help every student to build character and develop a harmonious way of living with others. In Chinese, the words of man of healthy mind and body, but also the creation of Confucian 'superior men' and 'philosophers' who are needed to lead society in establishing a rational social ord'kindness' and 'man' can be co-used. Furthermore, the aim of education is not only the moulding er based on humanism."

Bishop Baker: "There are moral issues here and I believe that it is only when the different disciplines of science, the arts, ethics and religion meet together, - as I hope they will in this college, - that students can have an understanding of life in its wholeness. It is only on the basis of this wholeness of outlook that they can make the moral decisions which are needful for our times."

In February 1972, at the invitation of the Northeast Louisiana University, Tulane and other universities, Dr. Henry H. L. Hu, President of the College, toured America and lectured at sixteen universities including Harvard. His trip evoked favourable comments and paved the way for academic co-operation between the College and several universities in the USA.


In July 1972, the Northeast Louisiana University and our College jointly administered a summer course in Comparative Sociology in Hong Kong. Participants in the course were given credits by that university which were transferable to other American universities. More academic cooperative programmes including one leading to the Master of Business Administration degree have since been instituted and developed. 香港樹仁大學（簡稱樹仁），英文名稱Hong Kong Shue Yan University（簡稱HKSYU）, 是香港第一所私立大學，由胡鴻烈及鍾期榮夫婦於1971年共同創立，原稱香港樹仁學院，2006年起獲政府承認為大學。樹仁大學是香港第一家可頒授學士學位的私立大學。

歷史沿革

時序
1971年，樹仁學院於跑馬地創立。
1978年，政府撥出寶馬山的一幅地，樹仁學院遷至現址。
2001年，樹仁學院通過香港學術評審局評審，開辦4個榮譽學士學位課程。
2005年，樹仁學院宿舍文康大樓落成。
2006年，樹仁學院正名為「香港樹仁大學」。

起源
起初鍾期榮計劃創辦一間幼稚園，然而她的夫婿胡鴻烈說：「與其辦幼稚園，不如辦大學！」這樣，樹仁學院的歷史就開始了。

創辦樹仁，胡鴻烈將當大律師所賺的錢全押下去，花了70萬港元買下跑馬地成和道3層高的小洋房做課室。1978年，政府撥出寶馬山的一幅地，讓樹仁學院作為永久校址，但地皮峭斜，在坡上只能興建幾層高的校舍，他不服氣打了176條樁，建成12層高校舍。當年，政府建議樹仁學院、嶺南學院和浸會學院3所專上學院改行「二二一」制(即2年預科，2年專科和1年學術性教育)，並由港府提供經濟資助。當時，樹仁堅持4年制，沒有接受政府的錢，默默耕耘，也令樹仁學院往後的發展受到嚴重的制約，漸漸落後於其他專上學院。

2001年樹仁學院順利通過香港學術評審局的評審，獲准開辦4個榮譽學士學位課程，成為香港第1所可頒授榮譽學士學位的私立高等院校，可見樹仁學院的學術水準已經得到肯定。


正名為大學
2005年，樹仁學院第3幢主要建築物－宿舍文康大樓，施工3年多終於落成。大樓樓高29層，可容納700多名學生及教職員住宿，並設有多項康樂設施，於今年3月初正式啟用。宿舍大樓除有助豐富學生的校園生活外，亦使樹仁更接近私立大學的規模，是樹仁邁向私立大學的里程碑。樹仁大學現有10個學士學位課程，學術評審局更於2006年5月已完成對樹仁的最後一次院校評審，並正式通過其管治及質素保證機制。而隨著樹仁學院可頒發學士學位，樹仁學院亦陸續開辦學位補修課程，讓榮譽文憑學生補修學分，以取得學士學位。另外，樹仁已向政府申請撥款興建研究院綜合大樓，並已滾存約三億元儲備支持研究院的運作，以提升教學質素。而香港學術評審局已在2006年暑假，通過樹仁具備自我評審資格，並於同年12月19日經行政會議通過，正名為「香港樹仁大學」。


校園環境
位於香港北角的寶馬山山腰，鄰近賽西湖公園，可俯瞰維多利亞港。校園分三部份：

教學行政大樓：1985年建成。樓高11層，設施有普通課室、電腦室、演講廳、禮堂、籃球場、室內運動場、室內壁球場、教授辦事處及飯堂等。
圖書館大樓：1995年建成。樓高19層，設施有圖書館、停車場、訪客賓館及會議中心等。
學生宿舍文康大樓：2005年建成。樓高29層，設有學生宿舍、學生事務處、宿舍組、室內運動場、游泳池、自修室茶座、多用途活動室及會議室等，學生會及學生活動中心亦設於大樓內。其中24至26樓為教職員宿舍，21至23樓為研究生宿舍，6至19樓則為本科生宿舍。
