引擎匹數同cc

一匹馬力相等於一秒鐘引擎可發出大約745焦耳的能量. 它是由James Watt定義為一匹馬能以每分鐘 1 英尺的速度拉動 33,000 磅的物件所作的功率. 馬力是功率的單位, 馬力越大, 功率越高.

功率=力量 * 速度.

而力量是跟加速度成正比的, 所以馬力較大的汽車, ,可以做出較大的加速度(即起步快)及較快的極速, 當然要視乎波箱的配合.

引擎測試標準常見的有JIS, SAE, EEC, DIN四種, 它們分別為日本, 美國, 歐盟, 德國所採行的測試標準. 另外還有總馬力和淨馬力二種測試方式. 兩者的不同在於總馬力是在引擎沒有附掛任何附加設備時所做的測量值, 而淨馬力是引擎在附掛發電機, 水泵, 排氣管等附加設備後所做的測量值. 目前引擎測試幾乎都是淨馬力測試

至於幾多cc, 是指引擎汽缸的容量, 一般私家車的容量汽缸容量大約介乎千幾至三四千之間. 雖然幾多cc跟幾多馬力沒有直接數學上的公式關係, 但是汽缸的容量越大, 生產出來的爆炸力便會越大, 因而得出較大的馬力.
