In court, a solicitor or barrister will address the solicitor of the other side as "My friend". But if the other lawyer is a barrister, the address should be changed to "My learned friend". This is the more formal way of address.
Some say that nowadays it really doesn't matter if you address a barrister as "My friend". Nevertheless, it is known that some barrister will feel offended if you address him as "My friend" instead of "My learned friend".
