1889年一次嚴重的發病令梵高產生恐懼，被可怕的幻想症糾纏。他害怕醫院內其他的病患，因此整整六個月沒有走出房門。他說：「自我生病以後，即使在戶外也感孤寂，因此不敢出去。」在這畫中，他嘗試把極度不安的情緒解放出來。天空出現天文奇觀， 兩團巨大的漩渦狀星雲在空中扭曲， 十一顆超大的星星被碩大光環圍繞著，光芒劃破夜空。 橘色的月亮發出耀目的光華， 一條寬闊的光帶橫亙在地平線上， 深藍的天空出現不安的騷動。
