The most important thing about participating in a group discussion (especially starting one) is to remain natural under the pressure. Keep in mind that your opinion is probably just as valuable and worth hearing as any other speakers' (I'm under the impression that you've given the topic thorough thought).
First of all.. if you have a number of topics you need to address and there isnt a priority list, choose the one that will most likely provoke opinion. Controversies are always easy discussion starters.
If that piece of tip doesn't work, then you either
1. Lack an abundance of topics
2. Have no controversies to address (though that's unlikely since GDs hardly move forward with mere summarizations)
With or without controversies, it is best to try to find one piece of information that you found intriguing. Give a brief summarization of what its about, hint the point of interest, and then open the topic up for discussion.
For example: You have to discuss an article on abortion in the United States. You have an essay in hand that opposes abortion due to religious considerations.
To start a discussion: "This article takes a side of opposition on the subject of abortion because XXXXX... I found the fact that this influential author was speaking from a religious point of view particularly interesting, as he is supposedly speaking to a public of free opinion."
Hope that helped =)
