現舉例子如下:
1)First-hand: This is first-hand information.這是第一手的資料.
First-rate film: This is a first-rate film.這是部一流的電影.
2)Second-hand: He brought a second-hand car yesterday.他昨天買了一架二手車.
Second-class: Please send a letter second-class. 請按第二類郵件寄一封信.
3)Five-day-week: Government moves to five-day week.政府推行五天工作周
Five-day conference: We will have a five-day conference 我們將有一個為期5天的會議.
4)Well done: He prefers his steak well done. 他喜歡吃熟透的牛排.
Well-known: He is a well-known actor.他是位著名的演員.
5)Open-minded: She is an open-minded grandmother. 她是位思想開通的祖母.
Open-air: There is an open-air swimming pool. 那兒有一個露天的游泳池.

注意:有些形容詞是不需要用hyphen表示的,像 well done;另外,複合形容詞也不一定只有二個字構成的,有時也可以是3個字或以上的(但只佔少數),像例3.
