There are simply two kinds of Macro Extension Tube, one is " Manual " and the other is " Electronic ". And of course, manual one is cheaper and electronic one is more expensive, cuz the electronic one provides the same camera's TTL metering system, no exposure compensation will be required.
Adventages of using Extension tube:
- It has no glasses on the tube. That means you don't need to worry for any degradation of the picture quality.
- One tube fits all size of lenses. No matter you're using 52mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm lenses... etc, as long as you're using the same brand, just one tube fits all! (of course, you may need a set of tube in different magnification.)
- Even you use more than 1 piece of tube at the same time, you don't need to worry about vignetting effect would be happened.
- If you need to change lenses while shooting, just replace a new lens and no need to take the tube off everytime.
Disadventages of using Extension tube:
- More costly.
- Depends on what brand and model, some tubes are not fully compatible with all lenses.
- Not-too-convenient for changing tubes in different magnification or adding more. You neeed to take the lens off first, change to another tube or put more, then put the lens back.
- More stuff / heavier to carry around.

Adventages of using Close-up filter:
- Cheaper in price.
- Fully compatible with all different brands, models and type of lenses.
- More convenient to put on and off, and add more, just need to screw it on the front of the lens.
- Easy to carry around.
Disadventages of using Close-up filter:
- Picture quality depends on the quality (glass coating) of the filters.
- The more pieces you add together, the more vignetting effect may result.
- You may need quite a bit of different size of filters (52mm, 62mm, 67mm...etc) for using with different lenses.
