2.)A department store sells a bag and a swim suit at a profit of 30% and 40% respectively.The marked price of the bag is higher than that of the swim suit by $50.
(a)
the marked price of a bag is 1.3a
the marked price of a swim suit is 1.3a-50
(b)
the total marked price of the bag and the swim suit is $470
1.3a+1.3a-50=470
2.6a=520
a=200
so the cost prices of the bag is 200
the marked prices of the swim suit is 200*1.3-50=210
the cost prices of the swim suit
=210/1.4
=150

A department store sells a bag and a swim suit at a profit of 30% and 40% respectively.The marked price of the bag is higher than that of the swim suit by $50

(a)
Marked price = cost price x (1+profit percentage)
= a x (1+40%)
= 1.4a

(b)
Total marked price = 470
marked price of swim suit + bag =470
1.4a + (1.4a +50) = 470
2.8a +50 = 470
2.8a = 420
a = 150

Thus, cost price of the bag = (1.4a+50)/ (1+30%)
= 260/1.3
= 200
Cost price of swim suit = 1.4a / (1+40%)
= 210/ 1.4
= 150
