My mother is 65 years old and she is a fine lady and we get along well. But just curious, ever since I grew up she has been repeating the same stories of her past again and a again. She could repeat telling her same experiences three to four times and she doesn't seem to bother that she has told me that before. Why?? Are old people just like this?? just curious.

We all have a time in our lives that is the most memorable. People like to talk about that moment in time because it makes them smile and laugh. They may see it as a story worth repeating to anyone within hearing distance, BUT it does get old. All we can do is humor them and listen... maybe there is a point that they're trying to make... some type of valuable wisdom.

Mothers are used to people never listening to them very well, so they know they have to repeat stuff a million times before anyone listens. The same theory applies to why mothers scream at their kids. She knows they won't listen if she speaks rationally.

Some people just cannot forget the past. They like to dwell on it. My best friend does the same thing. I think that she is looking for attention and sometimes, I think that she wants others to feel sorry for her. I just continue to listen.

isn't so everyday of the "youthful technology" to think of that's conscious of better than it relatively is eldars - even in spite of an admitted loss of expertise?!?! Your roommate has caught wind of what some could say approximately "ineffective and repititous prayer" yet, because of the fact he has on no account examine the Bible, he would not comprehend: Matt. 6:7 - Jesus teaches, "do no longer heap up empty words" in prayer. Protestants use this verse to criticize particularly some Catholic varieties of prayer which repeat words, alongside with litanies and the Rosary. yet Jesus' concentration in this coaching is on the "ineffective," and not on the "repetition." Matt. 26:40 4 - as an occasion, Jesus prayed a 0.33 time interior the backyard of Gethsemane, asserting the right comparable words lower back. it isn't the repetition it fairly is the subject. it relatively is the vanity. God seems into our coronary heart, no longer entirely at our words. Luke 18:13 - the tax collector saved beating his breast and praying "God be merciful to me, a sinner." This repetitive prayer became into beautiful to God because of the fact it became into provided with a hassle-free and repentant coronary heart. Acts 10:2,4 - Cornelius prayed consistently to the Lord and his prayers ascended as a memorial in the previous God. Rom. a million:9 - Paul says that he continually mentions the Romans in his prayers devoid of ceasing. Rom. 12:12 - Paul instructions us to be consistent in prayer. God seems at what's in our coronary heart, no longer inevitably how we elect our words. a million Thess. 5:17 - Paul instructions us to choose consistently. stable repetition is diverse than ineffective repetition. Rev. 4:8 - the angels pray day and night devoid of cessation the comparable words "Holy, Holy, Holy is our lord god Almighty." it fairly is repetitious prayer it fairly is gorgeous to God. Psalm 136 - in this Psalm, the word "For His steadfast love endures continually" is greater repetitious than any Catholic prayer, and that's God's divine word. Dan. 3:35-sixty six - the word "Bless the Lord" is in a matching way provided lower back and lower back, and mirrors Catholic litanies.

THIS SAME TRAIT EXISTED IN VERY PRIMITIVE TRIBES..NOT HAVING A GOOD MEANS OF RECORDING HISTORY...VERBAL REPEATS WAS VERY COMMON...MOSTLY ELDERS DID NOT WANT YOUNGERS TO FORGET FOR POSSIBLE SAFETY,AS WELL AS BRAGGING RIGHTS WHICH SOMETIMES CHALLENGES THE YOUNGERS TO DO BETTER THAN THE ELDERS--THUS ADVANCEMENT OF THE TRIBE IS ACCOMPLISHED- & PROGRESS FOR MANKIND....IN ALASKIAN INDIAN CULTUERS MANY CREATED TOTUM POLES TO INSURE THE YOUNGERS WOULD NOT FORGET--REPEATING WHAT HAPPENED GOING FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP TO SHOW PROGRESS TO COMPLETION....PERHAPS SEASON AFTER SEASON ...YOUR MOM IS JUST A HISTORIAN !...............DAVID

Answering this from a psychoanalytic perspective, it's because your mom is orally fixated. She doesn't really care if she repeats the message. It's just the fact that talking is great fun for her. There! Best answer! Thanks

Love your mother while she is with you. What difference is it if she repeats herself. One day you will wish she was around to tell you a story.

Kait, my be on the right track, There is also a Physiological glitch alot of people get stuck with. It's when the response to a suggestion or story is not what the story teller is expecting. The teller thinks you just did not get there meaning or you would have reacted in a manner they feel is appropriate. I have family that does this as well. They are looking for the response they wish us to make that tells them we got it. Other wise it will be repeated for our own good.
My father has told me how he quite smoking literally hundreds of times. I still smoke so he figures I just don't get how easy it must be to quite because he did it.
Kind of aggravating, but it's a small price to pay for peace in a family

You didn't say how long its been since you "grew up" but continual repeating of the same story can be a sign of dementia. My fiance's mother would tell the same story in the same words 2 or 3x in one visit. It got so that my fiance & I could say the story with her (but we didn't). Within 2 yrs she no longer knows who he is.

If its not dementia (or Alzheimers) it might simply be that she has nothing else to talk about because she has stopped being involved in life. Aged people don't do this for attention. My bet is that she is in the beginning stages of dementia or Alzheimers. Why don't you see her dr or write him & tell him what's going on? He may delve into it further or send her to a specialist.

The older you get the more reflective you are. People recount stories for several reasons. Some like to relive the moment, some want to share their wisdom or show their importance. And some want to assure themselves that they accomplished what they wanted in life. The telling of the story is not for your benefit... it is for hers so that is why she will tell you over and over. It is the telling part that is therapeutic. It doesn't matter who the listener is. Also just in case her memory may be slipping get her some puzzles (ex: crossword puzzles). Psychologists believe that doing trivia or puzzles to keep the brain active helps aide aging and continuing brain function.
