Corporate Profile

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), established in 1982, is a public corporation providing high quality mass transport services in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

KCRC is one of the world's most successful railway operators: each day it carries about 1.5 million passengers on its 113-kilometre network.

The Corporation currently provides three domestic passenger rail services: East Rail (including Ma On Shan Rail), West Rail, and Light Rail.

East Rail, a suburban mass transit service, is Hong Kong's primary north-south transportation artery. It operates between East Tsim Sha Tsui and the Mainland boundary at Lo Wu. Ma On Shan Rail branches off the main East Rail alignment at Tai Wai and runs to Ma On Shan.

West Rail, a mass transit service running between the North West New Territories and Kowloon, ties the area's growing new towns and the urban centre.

Light Rail, is the major mode of transport within the North West New Territories and a feeder service for West Rail.

KCR buses support all of these networks by providing feeder services.

In addition to its core territorial rail services, KCRC also operates through train passenger and freight services to and from various cities in the Mainland. Nearly a quarter of a million people take East Rail trains to or from Lo Wu each day.

KCRC designs and builds new railways. The Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, upon completion in 2007, will provide a second railway link to the Mainland. The alignment will branch off the existing East Rail line north of Sheung Shui Station and terminate at Lok Ma Chau. Construction began in 2003 and is due to be completed in 2007. The Kowloon Southern Link will join East Rail and West Rail by connecting West Rail Nam Cheong Station to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station. Construction began in 2005 and the planned completion date is 2009.

KCRC is also active in property development, property services and related commercial activities.

As the KCR network extends further into the New Territories, it spurs additional social and economic development in these fast-growing communities, and increases their appeal as places to live and work.

Over the years, the Corporation has demonstrated its commitment to fulfilling its role as a socially responsible corporate citizen through an extensive range of community programmes.

The Corporation receives no government subsidies, is entirely self-financing, and has been consistently profitable since 1985.
