狗仔隊的由來：原為意大利文」PAPARAZZI「，首次出現於1958年，正式翻譯名為「追蹤攝影隊」。1960年，意大利導演費力尼在電影《甜美生活》中，男主角馬斯杜安尼就是八卦新聞記者，經常出入上流社會，為尋找題材而搜肚刮腸。1963年，費力尼的〈八部半〉再度出現八卦新聞記者的角色，奠定了「PAPARAZZI」形象。

中文翻譯的「狗仔隊」則是由香港人所開創。50年代的香港警察刑事科擅長追蹤案件，以跟蹤、竊聽的調查方式聞名，這些便衣刑事偵察員（俗稱0記），外號「小狗隊」，取意在於狗擅長靈敏的嗅覺追蹤獵物。這種調查追蹤方式後來被香港記者發揚光大，而由於長時間的追蹤、守侯，非一人所能獨立完成，以這群善用鏡頭捕捉漏網消息的記者，也就被統稱為「狗仔隊」。
