Yes, it's better to use the atm card get money from the atm machine.
I work in Japan and also use hsbc atm card to get money. Remember, not all the machine accept the card:
1) You can use the machine with the sign "PLUS" (you can see the sign same as the back side of the card)
2) The rate is different everytime but normally is average 1000 Yen = 67.5 HK
3) The handling charge is HK$25 each time (no matter how much you take)

PS: You just need to find the ATM machine with "PLUS" sign and then can take money. No need in HSBC bank, like Sumitomo Mitsui Bank, they have ATM machines in the train/MTR station
