Stage 1-It was a long day and we were required to be at
Cathay city from 0845-1500. There were 5 of us, all uni grads and we
were all from overseas. "Overseas" meaning CX will process us a lot
quicker because we can only be in HK for a short time. The tests were
a computer aptitude test, IQ test, English test and stage 1 interview.
The interview was conducted with a pilot and a HR. Quite standard
questions such as why you want to be a pilot, Did you apply to
Dragonair and personal background questions.

Stage 2-This was a even longer day and we had to be there
from 0830-1700. Again, i got put in an oversea group and there were 4
of us. One guy was a commercial pilot like myself with ATPL theory
except he is an instructor in NZ. The day included numerical test,
psychological test, group exercise, flight planning, technical quiz
(basic aeronautical knowledge standard) and stage 2 interview. The
interview was done again with a pilot and a HR. It was a 1 hour
interview, half on technical questions and half on general questions.
Even though the cadet program is aimed at people with no previous
aviation experience, I had to study especially hard for this interview
cause my ATPL qualification. Luckily i did, there were a few ATPL
engines and met questions. The pilot interviewer was very nice, he
really encouraged me to answer better cause he'd kept on complimenting
on your answers.

Stage 3-Stage 3 was quite simple, 45 mins interview with
the big bosses and hence named management interview. I remembered i
stepped out the elevator into the management level. Man that was the
first time I got quite nervous. It was the atmosphere, it was very
quite, strict, spacious and every door titled "Mr. xxx manager or
fleet manager". That's when my pre interview nerves really kicked in,
heart pumping quicker and quicker and i had to go to the toilet to
slowly calm myself down. Interestingly, when i walked into the
interview room everything was fine again. There were 2 pilots this
time conducting the interview. They were both fleet managers of
certain type; it was again half technical and half general. The
questions were quite similar but from a different angle. In comparison
to stage 1 and 2, this was a lot more difficult and some of them were
very tricky. They'd interrupt you quite a bit, put you under stress to
see how you handle it. For example, standard CRM questions such as If
the Captain did something non CX standard ops, how would you handle
it?

Stage 4-The last stage was 2 weeks all expenses
paid trip by Cathay to Adelaide for flight grading. I believe Will
Tidmarsh was there for his cadetship with QF cause i found his photo
there. Flight grading's purpose was to test your motor skills, rate of
learning and retention. During the 2 weeks, i did 3 flights in a
grob115 and 3 sims in the B200 Kingair. The kingair was my first gas
turbine hour and i enjoyed that a lot. Cathay recently changed their
flight grading program for experienced flyers, it used to be 7 flights
with DDM - Demo, Direct and Monitior and 3 aerobatics flight. With
DDM, it means you have 2 gos at it before they grade you in the last
one. Now is 3 flights without DDM. Personally, i think is quite a good
change because you could had 300 hours already and you'd aced the 7
flights because they were hold straigh level attitude...GFPT.. and
circuit etc flights. And the only thing you could be bad in was
aerobatics. Overall, i had a great time, everyone was very nice and
especially the instructors.
