Background

In 1971, the writer (Gina Greenlee) was in the fifth grade when Frankie died. After the death of Frankie, she had never seen a dead person before. Frankie and Greenlee were in the same grade, but Greenlee was 10 and he was 12, because he had been left back twice. He disturbed all the girls in class and never did any schoolwork.
