leaves of mosses do not possess cuticle on the epidermis. besides, the leaves are thin. thus, the surface area to volume ratio is large. if the leaves are left in direct sunlight, the rate of evaporation of water will be very large and the plant will suffer from dehydration

mosses do not have cuticle on the plant surface to reduce water loss.Therefore, mosses are poorly adapted to the terrestrial environment and are mainly confined to damp and shady areas.
