Your question is simple yet complicated. I am very glad that you bring that up.
First, you mentioned what we should "believe". John 3:16 states " God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life." This verse is pretty self-explanatory. Yet it may lead to another question, "what and how do we believe we Jesus?"
Before we go into the proposed question, let's look at the 2nd part of the question. What should we "recognize"? I think the first thing we should recognize is our relationship with God. Who is God to you? Genesis 1:1 states that "in the begining God created the sky and the earth". Later on you will find that God created other things including human being. From this we can conclude that God is our creator. If you believe that, then you are ready to establish a personal relationship with God. We develope our relationship with God through communication --- we read His words (the Bible), we talk to him (pray), and we praise and give thanks to what He has given us, and that's how we worship God because He deserves it. By reading the Bible, you will learn a lot more about God and what is the Christian faith based on so I highly recommand you to do that.
I think by recognizing your relationship with God, which leads to understanding God's characteristics and His plan, you will be able to see what and how we believe in Jesus.
So basically, just to sum up what I just said, Christianity is about believing that Jesus Christ is our personal saviour. Since we admit that He is our saviour, we recongize His role in our life. And here comes with all the things Christians should and should not do.
And of course, if you not do recognize the authority of the Bible, then what I said would mean nothing to you. But the thing is, if you don't even recognize the authority of God (that He is our Creator, our Lord, our Saviour) in the first place, how can you not question all those "myths" in the Bible? So, if you really are sincere about this faith, I think you should pray. God will listen to your prayer even though you don't know him; He knows you long long time ago. Share with Him with all your doubts, questions and uncertainties. Open the Bible, you will find the answer.
Start reading the Bible with the Book of John. It's the 4th book in the New Testament. In that book you will learn a lot more about Jesus.
