A famous "floating" torii at Itsukushima Shrine

It should be spelt as 'Torii' and read as 'Tori - i', though sometimes known as 'Tori Gate' in English speaking world. In Japanese, tori (鳥) means bird and i (居)means place. It is a traditaionl gate-like structure commonly found in Shinto shrines in Japan. It usually marks the transition from the human world to the sacred place, i.e., the shrine.

Most Torii are painted in red colour, and form an integral part of the beauitiful scene of Japanese shrines. Among them, the 'floating torii' at Itsukushima Shrine (嚴島神社) in Hiroshima Prefecture (廣島縣) is said to be one of the three most beautifual scenes in Japan for it is built on the shore and appears to float on the water at high tides.

Tori is one of the three most beautiful spots in Japan. "Tori" means bird. The Tori is a symbolic gateway marking the entrance to the sacred precincts of Shinto shrines in Japan.
