First check the device manager. Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desk top and select properties. Click on the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
When the window come up look down the list to find Sound, video and game controllers. Doubleclick it. Look to see if there is any device that has an "!" on it. If so, click to select it and press the delete key on your keyboard. After that, reboot you computer. When Windows boot up again, it will say a new hardware found. It will try to find the driver for it. Let Windows find the driver for you. After the driver is installed, you sound device should be ok.
If you bought the sound card separately, you may want to go to the website of the sound card company and download the latest driver. Use the same procedure to reinstall the new driver or manually tell the computer the location of the driver.
