Try to Remember (song)

"Try to Remember" is the most famous song from the musical comedy The Fantasticks. In that show, it is the first song sung, to get the audience to imagine what the sparse set suggests. Notoriously, its lyrics, written by Tom Jones, rhyme "remember" with "September"; and "December."; Harvey Schmidt composed the music. Instrumentation in the musical is also sparse.

This song is riffed as the beginning of the overture to the remake of the video game Chrono Trigger, whose instrumentation is that of a wind-up music box.

"Try To Remember" was originally sung by the late Jerry Orbach, who was most known for his wisecracking Lennie Briscoe on Law & Order, in the Original Off Broadway production of The Fantasticks "Try To Remember" made the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart three times in 1965 in versions by Ed Ames, Roger Williams and the Brothers Four, but the biggest hit version of the song was in 1975 by Gladys Knight & The Pips, who combined it into a medley with a cover of Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were". The Greek singer Nana Mouskouri also recorded it and she even sang it in German, French and Italian, the song was a big hit for her career. In the Pips' version, Knight recited some of the lyrics from "Try To Remember" in spoken-word fashion before beginning to sing "The Way We Were."
