Hi,
I am a university student who is studying in Melbourne too. Safe or not is really depends on your son's behavour and what type of activity he chose to do during this time.
I have been living there for 3.5 yrs since my age was 18, i have never being beaten by gangs or fight with someone, not even got rub etc.
But i know someone had that kind of experience because they used to go to disco, go out at night. Here is some advises:
1) Dont go out at night (after 7:00, usually people dont have to go out at night because the shops closed at 6:00 on the weekday)
2) Dont go to club, pub, casino because when people get drunk, you know how danger they are.
3) live like a normal guy, dont show off no matter how rich you are, unless you have got a body guard with you.
In addition about you concern of living along in the homestay, can i know where does he live? cus it really depends on which area he lives, for example, there is relatively higher crimes rate in Lylidale etc.
I had that time before, while my homestay family went away for a month, but nothing special happened, remember, everyone have a chance to face a crime when bad luck arrived. What your son has to do is to reduce the chance by doing what a reasonable student will do in oversea. Correct?
Last thing to know, you can alway get help, there is some many nice people no matter the race around there!!
In case anything happens, call 000 for police, fire etc.
