Lesson Plan: Matter as Particles (core)

Overview:
In this unit, the students learn that all matter is made up of tiny particles.

1 Introduce matter as the building block of the Universe. Let students read the story of how Dr Brown discovered that matter are made of tiny particles. Then let them do an experiment to observe how smoke travels. This enhances the idea that matter is made of particles.

2 Let the students go through the article on states of matter to learn how particle theory can be used to explain the three states of matter. Then, the students can try an experiment to see how salt can change the melting point of ice. They can also go through another experiment, which demonstrates that all matter has weight.
