A reactive metal loses electrons easily and gives out more energy (more exothermic) when forming ionic compounds. Therefore, for its cation state in compound or ore, it takes more energy to break the initial ionic bonding and get an electron, which is more thermodynamically unfavourable then less reactive metals.
