As I predict, you should note the two points in approaching your essay:
a) The conflicts and cooperation between the Europeans and the Chinese throughout the colonial period.
b) You should structured the essay by dividing into various aspects, and in each aspect, you should point out that there were differences between the two groups, but the difference was narrowed since 1910s and later there are no difference between them.

1.The social aspect:
There were significant difference between the two racial groups,e.g. the living environment of the European society was better than that of the Chinese (the peak vs Tai Ping Shan);the language of the two societies,etc.

2.The living aspect:
Different cultures led to conflicts between the two societies.
e.g. the bread poisoning incident of 1857was caused by the fact that the Europeans eat bread but the Chinese did not.
The sanitary system of the two societies were different, and this contributed to the hostility between them.
But after 1900s, the Chinese learnt that the western style of living was superior to that of the Chinese and so they changed to the western style of living.

3.The political aspect:
The Chinese were united to strike to fight for their own interest (mainly economic interest), which was none in the European society.

4.The economic aspect:
There was lesser difference between them because the Europeans who were willing to invest in HK were those eager to make business in the mainland China, so they accepted the Chinese way of doing business. And the Chinese in HK were willing to do business with the Westerners, so they always cooperated with the Europeans in various companies. e.g. The HK and Shanghai Banking Corporation.

5.The Sheung Wan historical path is mainly the history of preparing revolution in Guangzhou by Dr.Sun Yat-sen and his secret revolutionary societies in the 1890s to 1910s. This is a very interesting experience in visiting this path!
