An ophthalmologist is certified to treat eyes diseases and does surgery, etc. An optometrist treats vision impairments.

They do not usually prescribe glasses like optometrists do.

Opthamologists are Medical Doctors who specialize in eye disease and eye care. They can perform surgeries.

Optometrists are Doctors of Optometry, and are trained to detect vision problems and prescribe glasses or contacts. For serious eye problems, they must refer to the guy above.
