【Journey to the North】is a documentary film with historical view and native mood. The most outstanding part is not the part about Sowers Action's arduous charity walk from Hong Kong to Beijing, but the episodes of the introspections of people from different walks of life on 1997 regression. For instance, the bird observer in Mai Po, Martin Lee of the Democratic Party, philosopher Lo See Kwong, etc. During the interviews, they talked about not only the pros and cons of the transfer of Hong Kong's sovereignty, but also their personal views on Chinese culture, the impact of politic on individuals. At the end of the movie, there were even self taunting dialogues of the walkers. This is a documentary film filled with blood and tears, and self reflection.
【Journey to the North】 touches these two perspectives. However, it is more than that. The gradation is much more deep down inside, more complex.........there are the mainlanders's view on Hong Kong people, there are also Hong Kongers' feeling about the mainland. There are even the variations, the interlace of the culture of the two regions. The connotation of the film far exceeds other documentaries on the same theme. And it introspects Chinese culture and how politic moolds individuals through the opinions of people from different walks of life.
