Insulators likke plastic can be charged by rubbing. When a polythene rod or an acetate rod is rubbed iwth a neutral dry cloth, the friction between the surfaces of the rod and the cloth provides energy to the electrons in the outermost shells of atoms of the cloth or the rod. Then electrons are tranferred.
In rubbing, the direction of flow of electron depends on the materials of the objects. Besides, rubbing to objects only reallocates charges already present in the objects. No charges are created, nor destroyed.
