Yeah both Australia and NZ have their very own accents - got to say none of them are the so-called "correct". That said, however, I'd choose the Australian accent than the NZ accent anyday, here's why:
1) Fish and chips: Austalians would say it "fish end (like the previous poster mentioned) chips", which you can understand with no problem. BUT in NZ they say "Fish and chops"!! Their "i" sounds very different and hard to understand sometimes.
2) Six: Australians say "six" just like the Brits. In NZ...oh wait for it - "s-ex"! It just sounds like that word because of the way their pronounce their letter "i".
3) Splinter: It's "splinter" or "splinder" in Australia (coz we sometimes pronounce "t" as "d"). In NZ - "Splanter"!! Now that sounds totally different - where did the "a" sound come from??
Oh I have far too many examples - I remembered I had to adjust to their accent when I travelled there 2 yrs ago from Sydney. It was hard to understand - not as bad as the Irish though.
Hope that answered ur questions
