I went to Alice Spring and Ayers Rock few years ago by joining a local tour called 'ADventure tour". However, it is not difficult for you to hire a car and drive to the attarctions by yourselves as there have sufficient road signs to show you the ways.
There are 3 MUST see icons in the outback including the Ayers Rock, Olgas and king canyon). As i remembered, we departed from Alice Spring when sunrise and reached the King Canyon after noon. It is a nice place for you to hike as the rocks formation there is unique and the view is gorgeous. ( a bit like USA grand canyon). Although it is high energy consuming activity but definety worth to go. (walking time around 3-4 hrs)
On your second Day, u need to wake up early in the morning then drive to the Ayer rocks before sunrise. (arrived at around 5:30am). It is so amazing that the colour of the rock will change from blue to sharp orange. Then everyone will go n visit the Aboriginal culture centre nearby and then u can choose whether u would like to climb the big rock or not. (From the view point of aboriginies, the Ayer Rock is a spiritual icon, it is strongly demanded by the locals that visitors SHOULD NOT climb over the rock) However, i did climb over it before as it is a life time experience even i understand it is not good act. it is so steep 70度角, quite slippery and dangerous as there is only one long metal chain link from bottom to the top. 我好辛苦上到鐵鍊之盡頭後有個planteau(差少少先會到頂)已經好感動,仲攬住團友喊, 因有點驚, 上同落都係靠一條鐵鍊,中間一休息便會影響後面的人。如果想上到頂,there is no more metal chain line up...so.....only rely on your own hands...所以very dangerous......but 好有大地在腳下的feeling......一生難忘.
in the afternoon, u can visited another mountain called Olgas. This is formed by several big rocks and u can walk surrounding them. I feel this is less energy consuming than hike in KIng canyon but FOR YOUR SAFETY, it is highly recommened to bring at least 2 to 3 Litre of water with some energy bar/ fruits to revitalize your energy during your long walk. It is extremly hot there, no water supply on the rocks and very few plantation there. Sunglasses, sun block lotion (strong UV Protection), small backpack, safety kit and a good hiking shoe are essential.
In that evening, u can go back to Ayer Rocks and enjoy the sunset as teh colour is different again from what u've see in the morning. people used to buy a bottle of champane and chill out there.
