2) insert one of the leaves into a conical flask A containing water.
3) insert another leaf into another flask B containing potassium hydroxide solution.

Flask A is the control.It contain water because as flask B contain a solution, flask A also need to contain a solution so to show the the result is not due to the presence of a solution, but the absence of carbon dioxide.

because it shows the difference between the 2 flasks
and it must contain some solution or liquid in it
