Singapore is a very small country. From one ( Changi airport ) to the other side ( Jurong ) will take you about an hour.
Singapore is very well know as a FINE city. Fine as in penalty. You are fined if you chew chewing gum, fine if you throw rubbish etc...... therefore it is a very clean and safe city.
Since it is a small city, a couple of days is fine to see all in Singapore.
For family, you can spend a whole day in Sentosa Island, which is a resort playground with a variety of activities for everyone like exciting panoramic rides and nature trails with lots of history, butterfly park & insect kingdom, Underwater world which is the largest tropical oceanarium in Asia with a tunnel, Cable Car which is one method of reaching the island,
Other places of interest are Jurong Bird Park ( but with SARS not sure if you want to go ), Jurong Crocodile & Reptile Paradise, Singapore Zoo and at night you can try Night Safari and Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden. East coast Park ( more a beach than park and good for cycling )
Lastly, which I think is more for shopping are Malay village, Little India, Clarke Quay ( which is where the Merlion is ) and other shopping centres which are good Suntec City Mall, City Hall, Parco Bugis Junction, Chinatown, Orchard Road, Marina Bay etc.....
Please remember SIngapore is not a cheap country and some of the things you find I am sure you can find cheaper in HK. It is a a good and relaxing country and the weather is constantly 27 - 32 in temperature and the weather is nice and sunny.
Really up to you whether you want to join a tour group or not cos if you do you can visit Malaysia as well which is very close by and alot of stuff are cheaper than Singapore. I always go to Singapore with a package ticket ( airflight and hotel ) and you can not get lost in Singapore.
If you are going have fun. If you need more info let me know.
