The best way for you to develop your career in accounting is to become an audit trainee in Big 4 (namely PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernest & Young and Deloitte). This is widely known to be the best/quickest way to develop your career in accounting. By being an audit trainee, you will have the opportunity to understanding the accounting system of different corporations and how they deal with actual accounting issues. You will also be able to establish your network of accounting professionals which will help you to get into different opportunities in the future.

Pay: For entry level as audit trainee, monthly pay is around HK$10K-12K. Salary will increase if you obtain necessary qualification.

First ask yourself...Do you want to certify as a Public Accountant, if so, joining big 4 (i.e. EY, KPMG, DT or PWC) auditing department can give you such exposures (as most of their clients are listed companies) and resources for advancement (i.e. training and exam assitance). Some of the Big-4 now place their staff on job rotations meaning that you can help out in tax department during your slack season to get a feel of what others are doing.

As a staff accountant in Big 4, you will expect long hours during peak seasons and travel to the PRC if required for the audit. Most important of all, pass your HKICPA as soon as possible.

However, If you are more interested in management accounting (i.e. forecasting or budgeting or financial reporting), you may want to join a commercial firm's accounting department and get a CMA ( Certified Management Accountant) later on.
