Yes, I do agree with the above answers that both MSN and Yahoo have tons of functions. But I think the biggest reason is not that.
The people who were the first ones using ICQ are market leaders, and by the time regular people start catching up, both MSN and Yahoo has developed their version of messager. So it was easier for these people to try it out, because they were already using their Web-email. Also, it helped when both MSN and Yahoo made it very user friendly.
So the real answer is that the mass market has made the use of MSN and Yahoo more popular over ICQ. For example, if everyone is using VHS, it does not matter how good BETA is, people will switch to use the popular choice, because it is like a standard. It is like a Mac vs. PC in the business world (Mac is better, but PC is more popular).
