I think you have to ask yourself, do you have any target, that is, when to achieve which grade?
In my own opinion, if you do not have any target to achieve certain grade in a period of time, I suggest you to retake the grade 5 exam. Of course, practising the same pieces is boring, but at least you can eliminate the part of getting familiar with the pieces. What you need to do is grasping how to express the feeling of them. This is very important in higher grades and it is not bad for you to start in grade 5.
I stopped learning for more than 10 years after I got grade 6 (only pass) and took only 1 year to prepare for grade 7 and got a distinction. Although scale and sight reading were average, and aural is extremely bad (don't know how to answer most of the questions), I played the 3 pieces with expression and the examiner enjoyed very much... then, I got a distinction.
It is not difficult to pass, but first of all, you need to get familiar with the pieces, concentrate on every note, play it with heart, all these help you to get high marks.
