智能身份證 是更高度防偽的身份證明文件，證內的晶片儲存了印於證面的基本個人資料及持證人的一對拇指指紋「模版」。香港永久性居民(十一歲以下除外) 、持有簽證身份書的香港居民、擁有香港入境權的人士、在香港不受任何逗留條件限制的人士及已獲發通知標籤的非永久性居民，可使用智能身份證在安裝了e道的管制站辦理自助過關手續。除了智能身份證外，香港居民外遊時必須帶同有效的旅行證件。

The smart ID card provides proof of identity in a more secure form. With basic personal data and templates of two thumbprints stored in the chip, Hong Kong permanent residents (except those under the age of 11), Hong Kong residents holding Document of Identity for Visa Purposes, people who have the right to land or are on unconditional stay in Hong Kong, and non-permanent residents who have been issued with a notification label can use their smart ID cards for automated immigration clearance through control points installed with e-channels. Other than their smart ID cards, Hong Kong residents must bring along with them their valid travel documents when travelling.

全港市民換領身份證計劃
由二零零三年八月開始，政府將於四年內，按市民的出生年份分階段為他們更換身份證。市民可選擇到就近的智能身份證中心辦理換證手續。欲知詳情，請按此處。

Territory-wide ID Card Replacement Exercise
The territory-wide ID card replacement exercise commenced on 18 August 2003 and it will take about 4 years to complete. 27年或前出生者換身分證

凡於一九二七年或之前出生及持有現有身份證的長者，均須於今年九月四日至十一月十一日間換領智能身分證。
入境事務處(相關新聞 - 網站)發言人說：「合資格的申請人可致電熱線1838 333，或登入「生活易(相關新聞 - 網站)」網站www.esd.gov.hk，或使用「生活站」終端機進行預約。我們鼓勵長者的親友陪同他們辦理申請手續。」

發言人說：「為免長者舟車勞頓，他們可授權一位年滿十八歲的人士代領新證。」

如身分證上印有居留身份符號「A」或「***」符號，或身份證於一九九九年一月一日或以後發出並印有居留身份符號「R」，申請人只須帶同現有身份證前往申請。不屬上述類別的合資格申請人，除帶同現有身分證外，還須帶備旅行證件，以顯示其現時在港的居留身分。

發言人說：「若老年人、失明人士及體弱人士認為依照換證計劃申領智能身份證會損害其健康，可以書面形式向人事登記處處長申請『豁免登記證明書』。任何獲簽發『豁免登記證明書』的人士無須依照換證計劃換領新身份證。」
