the main difference between oil painting and acrylic painting is the overall feeling of the fininshed product. both types of paints have it's pros and cons. oil painting is used more for a smooth transition on the canvas while acrylic panitning can create texture and vivid brushstrokes.
Speaking from personal experiences, oil painting is difficult for amaterus, as it requires a lot of patience b/c you need to build up layers to create a realistic painting and each layer needs to be completely dry before the next layer can be apply on top. Also, if you are not use to this medium, it can create quite a mess, because the paint needs to be washed and thin down using turbitine.
Acrylic paints are easier to handle, they dry very fast and can be diluted with water, i think it is easier for a beginner to handle (but doesn't necessarily mean that it is easier to master). For impressionistic painting, i suggest acrylic because, as mentioned before, it is easier to creat brushstroke and because it's quick drying, it is easier for you to capture the both the emotion of your subject and also yourself on canvas.
of course, this is just personal opinion and experience.
