The Gospel of Mark, considered the oldest and most historical of the four gospels under the doctrine of Markan priority,[2] does not include a nativity narrative. Only the Gospel of Matthew mentions either the Star of Bethlehem or the magi. Matthew states:
... wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose [or "in the east"] and have come to worship him."[3]

The Star of Bethlehem was an object in the sky, possibly a nova, planet, or group of planets, that guided the magi (or "wise men") to a house in Bethlehem where the child Jesus was, according to the nativity narrative in the New Testament.[1]
