if slavery began in this contry in 1619, why did it take 200 years for it to become such a divisive issue? What specific events helped to make slavery an issue of public debate?

because in that time in 1619 it was less intense but then later around the 1700's it started to get more intense with more and more slaves being purchased, traded and used. Slaves started to run away and make prostests against the white men. Some did intense protest others did peaceful protest. I hope I was of some help to you. Thanks.

slavery wasn't a social issue for almost 200 yrs. b/c slaves were considered a basic form of labour, pieces of property that were actually very valuable to plantation owners and slaveholders. however, with the invention of new methods of harvesting crops and also the new idea of "all men being created equal", people all of a sudden saw slavery as a bad thing and a lot of ppl didn't like the way some slaves were treated. also a main reason slavery became publicly contested was when they were making the constitution and the southern states wanted some part of their slaves to count as population towards voting rights. i'm kinda hazy on tha whole subject cuz, like u, i'm in us history (actually APUSH) and we only recently covered this stuff. look up the 3/5 compromise and the constitution and slavery surrounding the drafting of it. this should help a lot. good luck...

Books like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" helped show people the horrors of slavery. Public speakers like W.E.B. Dubois, and Federick Douglass. Pressure from other nations that thought differently. I hope I helped out. (That's not all, but I hope it helped)

people thought it was ok at first. the white man liked to have ppl to what they wanted. thats why it took 200 yrs and so many battles were fought in spite of slavery.
