1) Promotion is one of the four aspects of marketing. The other three parts of the marketing mix are product management, pricing, and distribution. Promotion involves disseminating information about a product, product line, brand, or company.
Promotion comprises four subcategories:
Advertising
Personal selling
Sales promotion
Publicity and public relations
The specification of these four variables creates a promotional mix or promotional plan. A promotional mix specifies how much attention to pay to each of the four subcategories, and how much money to budget for each. A promotional plan can have a wide range of objectives, including: sales increases, new product acceptance, creation of brand equity, positioning, competitive retaliations, or creation of a corporate image.
Promotion is 推廣 in chinese. The main purpose to promote is to get target consumers/potential buyers awareness. Usually they will promote a product or service instead of the whole company. There is not meaning to promote a company. Since people do cares about the services or products provided. And executions vary from the product/service nature, company sizing, promotion budgets...
The common way is to advertise. Launch TVC, print ads, radio spots, DMs...to reach target audience. Sometimes, outdoor campagins like real demostration, road show etc such guerilla methods do help a lot. Lately, Dunkin' Dongnuts opens its 1st store in HK, to arouse people awareness, they hire some clowns (or actually some natives wearing in clown suits) giving out flyers in CWB near the store. When people pass by and see those outstanding clowns, they will definitely pay more attention to them and try to seek out more. This is one way of promotion too.
Hope it helps
