Let x be the larger number. Then the smaller number is x - 8
The sum is 88. Therefore
x + (x - 8) = 88
2x - 8 = 88
2x = 96
x = 48
The larger number is 48.

There is no need to solve the problem using simultaneous equations as we aim at finding the larger number ONLY.

Let the larger number be x.
x+x-8=88
2x=96
x=48
So the larger number is 48.

一條和差問題。
公式:
1.大數=(和+差)/2
2.小數=(和-差)/2
根據公式1,大數是:
(88+8)/2
=96/2
=48

Let the larger number be a, the smaller number be b.
∵The difference of two numbers is 8.
a-b=8
∴ b=a-8
∵Their sum is 88.
a+b=88
a+(a-8)=88
2a-8=88
2a=96
a=48
∴The larger number is 48

Let y be the larger number, that is the smaller number is (y -8)

y + (y - 8) = 88
2y - 8 = 88
2y = 96
y = 48

Hence, the value of the larger number is 48.

一個係 40...一個係48

x + y = 88.....(1)
x - y =8...(2)

form (2)
x - y =8
x = 8+y..... (3)

put (3) into (1)
x + y = 88
8+y+y =88
8+2y = 88
y =40

sub y =40 in (2)
x -40 =8
x=48
