"Ford Professor" is a kind of title to honour professors who are reputed in their own fields. If a professor is a named professor, it means that (s)he is famous in his/her field of specilization.
In addition, named professors are usually (but NOT always) entitled a given amount of research fund which enables them to further pursue researh on his/her field.
You may wonder, where does the name "Ford" come from? It depends.
Usually, it may be the names of the alumni who make generous financial contribution to the school OR may be professors who retired or is deceased and the department wish to establish a named professorship to honour their works and dedication to the department.
If you are curious, I provide the departmental economics websites of MIT and Harvard and you can see that majority of professors are indeed named professors.
I am not sure about Hong Kong but Ricardo Caballero in MIT is Ford International Profressor of Macroeconomics.
P.S. Usually, but not always the case, Named-professors are full professors who have tenure.
