If the sum of two consecutive even numbers is 46, find the values of these two numbers.

y + (y +2) = 46
2y + 2 = 46
2y = 44
y=22
y + 2
=22 + 2
=24
That is the smaller number is 22 and the bigger number is 24.
Checking:
